Newcastle warms to geothermal power prospects

Engineers are increasingly confident that Newcastle and Gateshead could soon heat water by harnessing geothermal energy trapped in rocks beneath Tyneside. An exploratory borehole completed earlier this year provided early indications that the site boasts sufficient energy for the project. Speaking to BusinessGreen , professor Dermot Roddy of Newcastle University's Institute for Research on Sustainability (NIReS), said the research team working on the flagship project is preparing to undertake formal testing of the 1km deep well in October, with a view to delivering the results by the end of the year. However, he insists the early indications are positive and suggests the site could be used to heat water for the city. "We've not gone deep enough to harness energy that will produce electricity, but the early indications are it will be good for hot water," he said. "The quest...
