Shocking Trout to Protect Them

Pennsylvania fishery biologists are wrapping up the second year of a major effort to explore wild trout streams they have never before assessed, in areas increasingly vulnerable to impacts from development. Armed with electro-fishing gear, they have visited hundreds of headwater streams at risk of pollution, sedimentation and other effects from coal mining, suburban sprawl and natural gas extraction from the Marcellus shale . It is the now-booming fracking industry that has given the project greater urgency. Several colleges, universities and environmental organizations, like the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and Trout Unlimited’s Eastern Abandoned Mine Program , have joined in the effort. Participants make rigorous treks, often to remote, mountainous areas, and electro-fish headwater streams to temporarily immobilize trout so they can be captured, counted and measured ...
