Dotearth: Irene: Surge, Wind and Rain, Rain, Rain - A reminder that rain kills, and Irene is an extraordinary rainma...

NOAA/Hydrometeorological Prediction Center Click here for the latest three-day projection and the color scale. I’m posting this projection of the cumulative rainfall estimate over the next three days from Hurricane Irene as a reminder that while storm surge and wind damage will be fairly tightly focused, the storm’s destructive potential will be felt over an enormous area, with the prospect of serious flooding across thousands of square miles. As noted yesterday in a comment , David Robinson, New Jersey’s state climatologist and a professor at Rutgers, is particularly concerned about rain because the ground in much of the region is already saturated from earlier rains: We have already had our 6th wettest August since statewide records began begin generated in 1895 (most of that in the past two weeks), so the ground is saturated and the rivers primed.
