State Department Ignores Risks, Approves Keystone XL Pipeline | Care2 Causes

Tar sands recovery in Canada’s Boreal Forest alone threatens to kill 160 million migratory birds (including many favorite songbirds) and millions of native animals. Similar losses are to be expected in the many other areas where tar sands and oil shale deposits can be exploited. These are some of the clearest examples of the huge environmental costs of pursuing increasingly dirtier fuels. Huge deposits of tar sands and oil shale exist, rivaling even those of coal, but there is overwhelming agreement among environmentalists that these and most of our vast reserves of coal (another filthy fuel) must be left in the ground if we wish our grandchildren to have a livable planet. Along with mounting nuclear hazards, this is currently our most critical environmental threat. Oil companies are testing these waters, with ads aimed at softening the resolve of the public on this issue....
