Solexel, Kleiner-Backed Stealth Solar Firm, to Invest $940M in Malaysian Fab?: Solexel, the former Soltaix, is...

Thanks Eric for a detailed write-up with links to relevant patents. That does sound like an awful lot of money, but then again you don’t know what kind of subsidies/partnership they arrange in Malaysia. I’m guess the real cost to Solexel would be considerably lower. After a cursory look at their patents, it does look like their technology could be expensive. 3D structures and honeycomb arrays are used in space-grade triple junction cells, where cost is not a concern. Now if they can get manufacturing cost down, who knows? Their target efficiency is still a bit below SunPower, and even they aren’t having exactly an easy time in this low-cost low-margin climate, despite having an excellent infrastructure already in place. Best of luck to them though, we need more innovation in the field, and one of these companies may well take off big.
