Hurricane Irene sprawls across nearly 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) in this true-color image taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite on August 24, 2011. At the time the image was taken, 2:10 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, Irene was a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 120 miles per hour (195 kilometers per hour). The National Hurricane Center forecast that the storm would intensify on August 25. Irene is currently forecast to graze North Carolina on Saturday, August 27, and then move along the Eastern Seaboard before going ashore over New England on Sunday.
