Launched in 2005, the Tescopoly Alliance aims to challenge, among other things, the market-distorting impact of Tesco on small businesses and the community. There have been victories in fighting the corporate takeover of the British high street, says its spokesperson and Friends of the Earth food campaigner Helen Rimmer: councillors recently refused permission for a Sainsbury’s store in Todmorden, Yorkshire, for example, because of the impact it would have on the town centre. ‘The number of objection letters to a new supermarket some councils receive – often running into thousands – would indicate widespread unhappiness about the supermarket takeover.
