Farewell to a Master of Energy, Mobility and Vibes

In the early years of energy analysis — the 1970s — Lee became a collector of energy intensity data. Heating fuel per building square meter, building square meters per family, vehicle miles per car, gasoline per vehicle mile. While others were speculating why energy use was high or low somewhere, Lee was collecting data and using that data to quantify energy consumption. He was passionate about data quality, insisting on primary sources when possible. For Lee, collecting data often meant visiting some country, say France, Germany, or Sweden, conversing with knowledgeable people from industry or government, of course in their native language, drinking wine — preferably good wine — with his new friends, and coming home with a database of energy indicators, made available to him during his visit.
