UTC bullish about wind energy prospects, despite collapse of Britannia

The owner of Clipper Windpower has insisted it is bullish about the future of the global wind energy industry, despite last week halting plans to build a giant 10MW offshore turbine in the UK. Pratt & Whitney (PW), the arm of engineering conglomerate United Technologies Corporations (UTC) which owns Clipper, last week terminated plans with the Crown Estate to install a prototype 10MW turbine dubbed Project Britannia that was being built in Newcastle . A spokesman for PW told BusinessGreen that the decision was taken as part of a "refocusing" of Clipper's strategy given the "unprecedented global financial challenges" affecting the wind energy market. He said the company will now focus on delivering Clipper's existing order pipeline for its 2.5MW onshore Liberty turbine, as well as developing next-generation technologies.
