For years, scientists have predicted that climate change, fueled by heat-trapping greenhouse gas emissions, would lead to more extreme weather. More floods in our amber waves of grain, more wildfires in the shadow of our purple mountains. Stronger storms from sea to shining sea. 2011 is living up to those predictions, with $35 billion in damages so far. Nine separate events have produced damage that cost $1 billion or more, according to the latest tally by the National Climactic Data Center. That ties a record set only three years ago, and this year is far from over. (Incidentally, $35 billion is the figure House Republicans proposed slashing from the U.S. budget in the opening days of the fight to cut government spending this year.)
