In weird recycling news, alligator fat actually makes a great biodiesel?

When visiting Louisiana, Florida or any of the southern wetlands, you’re likely to have at least one too-close-for-comfort alligator experience. But you probably never dreamed this pre-historic lizard could be the future of alternative fuel. Researchers at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette published a paper yesterday which found that alligator fat can be potentially converted into biodiesel. An estimated 15 million pounds of fat ends up in landfills each year from an industry that raises the American alligator – which is not an endangered species – for its skin and meat. Researchers noted that the high lipid content of alligator oil gives it better potential for biodiesel than lard from other animals.
