Tesco quietly drops controversial biodegrable plastic carrier bags

Hi I really enjoyed this article highlighting the change that Tesco have made in the use of bio-degradable carrier bags. The excuse of removing the oxo-biodegradable additive due to the weakening of the bags is very pertinent. It proves that Tesco among other supermarkets are terrified of upsetting their customer base in a highly competitive market. This is fair enough and talking about the strength and re-usable capability will go on forever. This leads to a very strong argument for government legislation to make the supermarkets in question and their environmentally "unfriendly" customers have to pay for the use of bags. Every one of the big four supermarkets in the UK must be going through hundreds of thousands of these dreadful free bags every week. I speak with some interest as a part time worker for Tesco (checkouts) and a person with an honours degree in environment...
