Cutthroat are among the trout species that are expected to lose more than half their habitat by the 2080’s. As difficult as it is to predict precisely how the planet will warm over the next century or so, it is even harder to refine predictions of how those changes will affect specific species. That’s because warmer temperatures alone are not the only driver of what happens to, say, four varieties of trout. But a group of scientists set out to do just that. In a study published online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science, they estimated not just what warmer rivers will mean for the life cycle of these western trout, but also how more winter rain or earlier snow melt...
