Thanks to new technologies, the exploitation of shale gas formations has expanded rapidly and now accounts for nearly 30 percent of U.S. gas production. As drilling rigs pop up near populous areas, the stakes have become enormous for millions of Americans. Shale gas extraction can mean profits for energy companies, royalties for some landowners and jobs for some.
