The next big thing in green: Growing a bike

The next big thing in green: Growing a bike

is nothing short of revolutionary — it uses bamboo forms that were grown in a field into the predetermined shape needed for the bike. This bike was literally grown. It's an incredibly efficient process — all of the energy needed to form the bamboo into the desired shape was harvested and expended by the bamboo plant itself. All the designer (Monash University student Alexander Vittouris) had to do was introduce and foster the right conditions (water, sunlight and a reusable form for the plant to grow into). It's far more elegant than the conventional route of prying raw materials from the land and then bashing them into shape using brute force and processing.
