As Offshore Drilling Moves Ahead In Arctic, Award-Winning Journalism Reminds Us Of Disaster In #Gulf: @nrdc @BPGulfLeak

Disaster often makes for good journalism. So it’s no coincidence that many of the just-announced winners of this year’s Society of Environmental Journalists annual awards focused on the worst offshore oil spill in our nation’s history, the 2010 disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. What is disturbingly coincidental may be the timing. The journalism awards were announced on the same day that Interior Secretary Ken Salazar was in Alaska announcing plans to expand oil drilling in a state known as our last great unspoiled frontier. Salazar’s agency just approved a permit allowing Shell Oil to move ahead with plans to drill in the harsh but pristine Arctic Ocean, in never-before been experienced conditions.
