Despite these immense challenges, there’s increasing global resolve to stop overfishing. At the Kobe III conference in June , more than 50 members of the world’s five regional fishery management organizations (RFMOs), including the United States, recommended a heightened campaign against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing of tuna, sharks, and other migratory game fish. Specifically, they proposed a better system for tracking illegal fishing vessels, so that poachers listed in one region will have a tougher time sailing under the radar elsewhere. The RFMO’s already require member nations to prevent illegal fishing, but sharing information would be an important development in the global fight. Yet as NOAA acknowledges, a recommendation is only “a first step.” Now the proposed measures need to be adopted and enforced by the RFMOs. It couldn’t come soon enough:...
