If you're in a cold climate, a simple geothermal system will not meet 100% of your hot water needs, so you'll still need a water heater. If you go geothermal, you can include a desuperheater option that will supply heated water to your water heating subsystem, thus saving energy. The desuperheater works only when the system is in cooling mode, so that's why it's not a solution to total hot water needs.
