The Comprehensive Spending Review: one year on | Julia Slay
that the current retreat of state funded services is at odds with the vision of the Big Society. We believe that there is an inherent tension between these two agendas; the Big society story may make the public spending cuts politically palatable, but will the cuts make the best ideals of the big society impossible to realise? To explore these two concepts in more depth, we are embarking on a major new two year project, with support from Barrow Cadbury and the City Bridge Trust. We will be working in two areas, Birmingham and Haringey, to explore how the cuts are affecting people and what opportunities there are to translate the ambitions of the Big Society into meaningful change for local people and communities.
