Photo © NOAA Ties to the Gulf Whale sharks are the world’s largest fish—on average they are 18-32 feet long. No one really knows how long they live, but they may reach 60 (and some think possibly 100) years of age. They mature slowly, and don’t reproduce until they are about 30 years old. Females give birth to live young—up to 300 pups at a time. Whale sharks cruise tropical and warm temperate seas throughout the world, except the Mediterranean. They spend most of their time in offshore habitats, but they do enter shallow waters to feed, mate, and give birth. In the Gulf of Mexico, they frequent the waters off of the Louisiana Delta.
