First Takes: Budget Cuts May Kill Gov't Green Spending, China's Climate Strategy, & More

• Automakers Agree to 54.5 MPG by 2025: The Obama Administration has made headway with automakers on fuel efficiency standards for cars and light trucks between 2017 and 2025. According to the Washington Post , the deal would raise the U.S. fleet average to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, which translates to 163 grams of carbon dioxide equivalent per mile. Compared to today's standards, that's a 50 percent decline in greenhouse gas emissions and a 40 percent drop in fuel consumption. • Budget Cuts Likely to Doom Green Government Spending: The dueling House and Senate debt-ceiling bills are each likely to offer lumps of coal to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy, GreenWire reported Thursday , but few have taken notice as the battle enters its next phase.
