Innovation from the Bottom Up

Innovation is quite literally “seeing the world anew,” and in doing so better understanding the nature of a challenge, and therefore the nature of the solution. This is first type of innovation I’d like to address – innovation that begins by reframing a problem in which the solution seems all but unknowable…. Take the case of hookworm, an insidious, debilitating disease that ravaged poor communities in the United States in the early 1900s, and is rampant today in the most impoverished corners of the world. It saps victims’ energy, leaving them unable to learn or to work. In 19th century America, hookworm contributed significantly to Southern states’ impoverishment. It remains a terrible, global scourge. At the turn of the 20th century, in response to this epidemic in the US, John D. Rockefeller established the Rockefeller Sanitary Commission for the Eradication of Hookworm...
