Cataclysms, Climate Change and California Opinion

One of the pleasures of following the annual surveys of the state’s environmental attitudes by the Public Policy Institute of California is witnessing how one-time cataclysms (financial crises, tsunamis, oil spills and the like) throw the neat progression of opinion change out of whack for a year or so. And then, like a rubber band springing back into shape, the attitudes largely revert to their old patterns; the cataclysm seems to have little lasting influence. Public Policy Institute of California The Fukushima Daiichi accident in Japan seems to have eroded support for nuclear energy in California, while a wariness about offshore drilling linked to the gulf oil spill seems to have receded.
