Keynes vs. Hayek | James Meadway on last night's LSE debate
Keynes vs. Hayek debate at LSE last night . With Lord Skidelsky and Duncan Weldon in the Keynesian corner facing Prof George Selgin and Jamie Whyte for Hayek, chaired by the affable Paul Mason, it was a suitably knockabout affair. Radio 4 are broadcasting it on Wednesday next week. You’d probably, by the end, have to declare a win for Keynes on points, although LSE attracted a typically free market crowd who cheered some of Selgin’s more outré proposals. It’s a tough call to defend the virtues of austerity on the same day the feeble UK GDP figures were released, but at least it was done here with a certain conviction. This is more than can be said for George Osborne, whose once boyish countenance has taken on a grim, haunted look of late, poor man.
