Green: Group Skewers Sustainable Logging Effort

Associated Press Acacia logs awaiting transport in Indonesia, where much lowland forest has been lost to logging. Less than one-fifth of the world’s forests are intact, and every year about 30 million acres are destroyed. With pressure on forests only expected to increase, the race is on to find a balancing point between commercial and conservation interests. The World Wildlife Fund’s Global Forest and Trade Network, now celebrating its 20th anniversary, seeks to protect vulnerable forests by promoting global trade in sustainable timber. Participating companies receive technical assistance and an image boost from association with W.W.F. In return, they commit themselves to improving their practices, relying more on wood products that are legally harvested and sustainable.
