You toss your trash into the nearest receptacle and probably never give it a second thought. But somewhere out there, a debate about the fate of your trash is raging. The majority of the estimated 243 tons of consumer solid waste generated each year in the U.S. is buried in landfills, while 32.5 percent is recycled or composted and 14 percent is burned . Though some look forward to the day the U.S. bids farewell to landfill disposal, others in the waste management industry are trying to turn decomposing landfill waste into a cheap source of alternative energy.
