Councils call for ban on 'smorgasbord' of low grade plastics to boost recycling

Councils call for ban on 'smorgasbord' of low grade plastics to boost recycling

Manufacturers, retailers, and the government must work to "urgently" bring an end to the use of non-recyclable plastics in packaging so that more household waste can be sent for recycling rather than landfill, the Local Government Association (LGA) has urged. The LGA, which represents nearly 300 councils in England and Wales, said it had carried out an analysis which found only a third of plastic used in homes is able to be widely recycled. Around 525,000 tonnes of plastic pots, tubs and trays are used by households each year yet just under 170,000 tonnes of this waste can be sent for recycling, it said.
