How smart growth in cities saves wilderness [VIDEO]

Of course building in urban areas is infinitely preferable to destroying natural land. But this argument presents false choices, because the problem is ever increasing growth of human population. Advocating for "smart" growth is trying to deal with human overpopulation in a way that doesn't deal with human overpopulation. We need to stop censoring ourselves and say, quite loudly and clearly, that human overpopulation is a huge problem that must be fixed. In fact, it's the most fundamental environmental problem there is. Without solving it, no serious environmental problems will be significantly solved. There is an issue that the author of this post fails to address: Many people who live in urban areas don't want ever more density. At some point it feels like you're a rat in a cage, so to speak.
