Note: This will be my column in the issue of Sierra magazine that just went to the printer, but this news is so exciting that I want to share it with you in advance. I'm usually skeptical of absolutes. But not when it comes to coal. Remember that Edwin Starr classic that Springsteen revived in the '80s? "War, huh, yeah. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! " In just about every way, that's how I feel about coal, which is why I was so excited when Bloomberg Philanthropies donated $50 million to the Sierra Club this summer to help us move America beyond coal. The Club's Beyond Coal campaign started modestly nine years ago, when government officials proposed building more than 150 coal-fired power plants across the country.
