This is a good article, and it’s nice to see some attention return to the only renewable energy technology that has truly crossed the grid parity line. A couple of notes: 2010 was a “la nina” year, which resulted in lower average wind speeds - especially in Texas and the Southwest at large. Texas installed only ~680 MW in 2010… while that seems high by national comparison, 2009 saw ~2300 MW of new capacity. So they slowed down their rate of installation, while working on transmission, and while seeing considerably lower average wind speeds… So the statement that curtailment “wasn’t as much of a problem as it was the year before”... should be taken with that in mind. I can only assume Herman Trabish meant Texas, and wasn’t simply making something up out of nowhere (ERCOT hasn’t released their curtailment summary for 2010, so there’s room for speculation here.
