More density equals less driving: just an urban legend?

I think the availability of cheap/free parking may be a bigger factor than density, though they are related. I live in Anchorage, AK. Plenty of free parking except downtown (which means downtown is mostly left to the tourists and offices, most of the shopping/fun/etc is elsewhere). No real incentive not to drive everywhere, except rising gas prices. BUT, because I choose to live in a dense-ish mixed-use area I can survive well without a car (even with a kid and elderly dad.) And I choose my job changes to not need to get a car - 3 different jobs since I moved to my neighborhood, all within 2 miles (by choice). So, I doubt that there is a big correlation between density and driving in my area (especially when you remove economic factors), but as driving gets more expensive and a less viable option for most, the denser, more mixed neighborhoods will be livable, the far flung...
