Science-based Climate Targets: Helping Business Leaders Fill the Climate Ambition Void

No matter how admirable the idea of “science-based targets” is, the number of companies who could realistically take such targets on will never be large enough to make a difference to climate change. For most companies, seriously embracing “science-based targets” would put them at a substantial competitive disadvantage to competitors that haven’t. Business decision-makers should not be seen as a proxy for societal policy-makers. The failure of societal policy-makers to adopt science-based targets does not mean we can simply say “okay, then it’s up to business.” That’s not greenwashing, but it is willful blindness that distracts us from what’s really required to tackle climate change.
