British Gas has announced that it will increase the price of energy from August 18th. Customers will witness an 18 per cent average rise in electricity and a 16 per cent hike to gas. It comes after ScottishPower said it would increase energy prices from August 1st by ten per cent of electricity and 19 per cent for gas. "We know there is never a good time to raise prices, but we are buying in a global energy market and have to pay the market rate," explained Phil Bentley, managing director of British Gas. Commenting on the news, energy secretary Chris Huhne said: "Britain's consumers are being buffeted by the violent and unpredictable winds of global fossil fuel prices." He added that the industry must move away from reliance on fossil fuels.
