The mercury scare propaganda is nonsense. The typical human body can effectively deal with ~1 micro-gram of mercury per day per kg of body weight (good rule of thumb)... which means you should be able to effectively pass ~70-90 ug/day (don’t know what you weigh, won’t ask) of Hg with absolutely no harmful side effects. A CFL has ~1-4 mg of Hg. So for the average bulb, if you were to break one and magically absorb 100% of the mercury within that bulb, it would take you between 20 - 50 days before 100% of that Hg was passed out of your system (it takes several hundred mg of Hg before even the most minute traces of mercury poisoning begin)... You just wouldn’t be able to eat fish for the next month or so. However, 100% of the mercury would absolutely NOT make it into your system.
