Canadian Cancer Society Spends More On Fundraising Than Research

A couple of years ago a friend trained for months to run in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s Run for the Cure. A family member had died of breast cancer. So she approached friends and family and added up a handsome sum of donations. The experience left a bad taste in her mouth. She ended up feeling used by a massive campaign that spent a whole lot of money promoting itself. It turns out she was right. Canada’s cancer societies have been very successful at raising funds through campaigns such as the Pink Ribbon Campaign , Run for the Cure , the Pink Glove Dance and the Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days . CBC’s Marketplace wanted to know how much of the latter’s dollars were earmarked for cancer research. So they examined the 2000 to 2011 financial records of the Canadian Cancer Society.
