Green: Wooing Voters (or Not) With a Climate Pitch

Sometimes it’s just not prudent to bring up certain subjects in certain company. Don’t talk about going skydiving in front of your mother. Don’t bring up religion around your great-uncle and try not to mention the recent demise of the family goldfish when your little sister is within earshot. Presenting a green-minded position on climate change to constituents, however, appears to be beneficial for politicians, according to a new study by the social psychologist Jon Krosnick of Stanford University’s Woods Institute for the Environment. In Dr. Krosnick’s national telephone study, 1,001 adults were presented with two statements on political issues followed by either a “green” position statement on climate change, a “not green” position statement on climate change or no mention of climate change at all.
