Rhino Poaching Threatens Conservation Gains

Twenty years of careful conservation efforts have nurtured rhinoceros populations in Africa back to relative health, after they were close to extinction in the early 1990s. Now those efforts risk being undone because of a sharp increase in poaching. The WWF published figures this week that showed how striking the surge in rhino poaching has been, and pointed the finger firmly at demand in Asia for rhino horn. During the first six months of this year alone, nearly 200 of these endangered creatures were killed in South Africa, which is home to the largest populations of African rhinos, the WWF said, citing statistics from the country’s national parks department.
