Indigenous Women: Defending the Environment in Latin America

Guest blog by Meredith Brown and Carley Reynolds, NRDC Latin America Project Interns Indigenous Women at the UN UNDESA-DSPD/Jimmy Kruglinski On this International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we celebrate the successes of indigenous peoples in Latin America in protecting their lands and communities. In particular, we recognize the strong leadership of indigenous women who have stood at the front lines of many of these achievements and celebrate the indigenous communities that have defended their lands from mega-projects. For this year’s observance, the United Nations celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples , which recognizes the rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous peoples.
