By John Mowbray. Increased amounts of synthetic microfibres floating free in the world’s oceans are a big problem not only due to their bioaccumulation inside aquatic organisms, but because they can also operate as platforms for the adsorption of potentially hazardous chemicals such as phthalates, PCB’s and heavy metals.
