U.K. scientists have discovered a way to change the color of gold without any chemical treatments

A red apple is red because it reflects a red wavelength of light and absorbs all other wavelengths. Capitalizing on this natural process, researchers at University of Southampton in the Programme on Photonic Metamaterials and the Optoelectronics Research Centre have discovered that by embossing metals they can change the way it absorbs and reflects light. Naturally occurring gold reflects a shiny yellow color, but the team can now make it reflect red, blue, green or whatever color you want without any chemical processes. Besides being far more environmentally friendly, the special gold could have interesting and economical applications for jewelry, fashion and other technologies that make use of metals. The colored gold could even be used in money as a way to make forgeries more difficult.
