3D-Printed Bioengineered Leather Could Appear on Runways in Five Years

Modern Meadow began the research as a reaction to the global demand of meat and animal products, and its effects on the environment as well as ethical concerns. The company hopes that the 3-D printed animal products is a way to one day meet the demands of consumers, while simultaneously decreasing the environmental effects and alleviate animal rights in the future. Yet the source cells for the lab grown leather would be derived from donor animals- or animals already slated to be killed for their skin or meet for consumers. This issue alone may be enough to render future production of lab grown leather to be deemed NOT cruelty free.
