1950s Brillo factory to be reborn as luxury condos in DUMBO

Aufgang retained the factory’s original brick facade, however, and cut off 30 feet from the rear of the building—with approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission —to stack two additional stories to the original four-story footprint. The loading dock, high ceilings, and large windows were retained to keep the interior’s spacious feel and access to daylight. Even-Tsur took advantage of the high ceilings, designing doorways and closets that go up to nine feet in height, and exposing the 14-foot-tall ceilings and columns in parts of the apartments. “I was working with the structure and bones of the building, the rhythm of the building, the sublime space of the building, the bones and ribs, preserving the history and integrity of the building,” said Even-Tsur.
