It’s not fun or easy, but I can overcome seasickness. It’s also not easy being on a boat for 19 days with 14 people you don’t know—especially when there are only two bathrooms onboard, and one of them is broken from Day Two on. Enough said about that. Out of sight, out of mind. People can’t see the effects of trash on the ocean, its marine life, and the ecosystems involved. And 60-80% of that trash is plastic. Plastic is essentially forever. It doesn’t go away—it only breaks down into smaller bits. That’s a big problem, since we every year we produce 60 billion tons of plastic, most of it for single-use packaging. Plastic kills thousands of marine animals every year. To a sea turtle, a floating plastic bag looks like a jellyfish. And to seabirds, the pellets used to make plastic products look like fish eggs.
