Soil Study Illustrates the Web of Human Impact on our Environment

A 12-year soil study reveals that global climate change is only one component of man’s progressively negative impact on our planet today. Scientists at BYU and Duke University have established a collaborative study on the effects of human impact on soil composition and, as a direct result, atmospheric chemistry. The results are less than pleasant and more than alarming. The increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere are irrefutable. This increase does not only affect our planet’s temperature scale, but also changes biotic interaction in the soil. This problem is being overlooked because it is not as conspicuous as the obvious climb in temperature and atmospheric CO2. As carbon dioxide levels rise, plant growth increases as well.
