Walmart fined US$81.6m for waste offences

BENTONVILLE – Walmart has been fined nearly US$82 million after pleading guilty to dumping hazardous waste, including bleach and fertilizer, in the US several years ago. A decade-long investigation uncovered the illegal handling and disposing of hazardous waste at Walmart's US retail stores. The offences, said to have taken place prior to January 2006, include hazardous wastes being allegedly discarded improperly in store waste bins, poured into the local sewer system, or transported without the correct documentation to US product return centres.
