Traditionally, these services have been provided by fossil or hydroelectric generators with spare capacity, but increasingly, it’s becoming cost-effective to procure them from distributed energy resources and other new, clean energy alternatives.For example, a utility-scale solar plant in California has shown that many of these ancillary services can be provided as a valuable byproduct of the plant’s inverters—extremely reliable solid-state power-electronics devices already paid for by their primary task of conditioning renewable power to feed into the grid.
