Zero-Energy Building Uses Living Algae for Power and Shade

The BIQ house is currently under construction for the International Building Exhibition (IBA) in Hamburg . Designed by Splitterwerk Architects, the building is slated for completion in March 2013. Once up and running, the project will allow scientists, engineers and builders to test the feasibility of the design which, according to the IBA, is meant to “set new standards for urban living in the future.” The bioreactor facade is made up of glass panels that act like giant Petri dishes to grow the algae. The algae can then power the building by both capturing solar thermal heat and creating biomass that is harvested for energy.
