Momentous month for onshore wind 21 September 2012 Milestone reached as 5 gigawatts of onshore capacity achieved this month Diversity of projects shown as community-owned project in England joins commercial scheme in Scotland tipping the balance Each megawatt of onshore wind delivers average of £100,000 to the local area RenewableUK, the trade and professional body for the wind and marine energy industries, is celebrating this month's achievement of 5 gigawatts of wind energy installed onshore. The 5GW milestone was reached with the operation of AES's 28.6MW Scottish Borders project, less than 18 months after construction commenced. This will generate enough clean energy to power the equivalent of 14,700 homes.
