Asia Report: Japan Taps Into Promising Geothermal Potential

The project, which is expected to begin operations in the fall, will use a binary cycle method , which uses heat from hot spring water with a low boiling point to power a turbine. While the size of the project is small, the potential could be great inside Japan’s geothermal-rich national parks. According to the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan's geothermal reserve is the third largest in the world, and 80 percent of those resources are in national parks. The nation, however, has only 18 geothermal power stations in operation, and the resource accounts for just 0.2 percent of the nation’s annual capacity.
