A team led by Roger Angel, Regents' Professor of Astronomy and Optical Sciences and director of the Steward Observatory Mirror Lab, has figured out a way to double the effectiveness of a photovoltaic solar panels using mirrors, according to a University of Arizona news release. The newly devised system is like attaching a small telescope to a solar panel. This concentrates the solar energy. The light then gets focused onto a glass ball, which distributes the light evenly across the cell. This system uses a larger mirror than similar systems, which use a cylindrical mirror to concentrate solar power.
